          Redwood Rubies

          By November Brown, Grade 12

Mother Nature’s burning, glazing the wood mined.
her cries engulfed in flame. The rubies shone,
Her crackling gasps, a sun-cast glow.
She swallows ash, The Mother had died.
drowning in terrain. The man entered the rubbled ruin,
She sparkles yet she shrieks, looking through the wreck.
a sound of burning jewel. Rubies his path,
A man steps back, Gems of wrath,
honored lumberjack, they spread cross Mother’s neck.
There was nothing he could do. The smoke puffed peacefully,
He shriveled in his place, the final ashes churning,
watching bark do the same. the last S.O.S.
          Curling oak, the Mother’s distress,
Fleeting hope, But now, she’s no longer burning.
The Mother was in flames. (Above) A Mother’s Dream, Sherise Lyou, Grade 9,
